these were the designs for six billboards that the substation gallery curates in newport, intended as part of the ‘radicalism’ show that’s running at the moment. two days before they were to be installed, hobson’s bay council (who funds the billboard part of the gallery) met and vetoed the fisting reference and the word “fagget”. pretty annoying. apparently the manager of the gallery had to explain fisting to the senior councillors though, so that’s a plus. sum lukewarm alternative designs of mine went on the billboards, and these were hung inside the gallery instead. the train to my home town goes past the billboards, which feels nice.
the exhibition has some really great work in it including a room by christopher sciuto and a collection of material from the gay and lesbian archives. u can see details here http://midsumma.org.au/program/premier-events/radicalism it runs until feb 23rd.
